Crawling is a motor skills activity that mainly concerns babies from 5 months of age, starting as soon as their muscles are sufficiently developed to allow them to balance.
In a play area, crawling in a tunnel, under a platform, or from one side of a structure to the other is a fun exercise that helps young children develop an awareness of their body in a small space.
Good head/hand/leg coordination is required to avoid obstacles, for example, bumping their head if they stand up too soon.
Crawling through a tunnel in an outdoor play structure also calls for a certain amount of courage : children need to overcome their apprehension to make their way through a relatively long and dark space.
